Board Profile - Treasurer:    Joe Montigelli

Joe Montigelli

I “volunteered” (wrong place, right time) to be the next one of the Executive Committee to provide my bio. I was born and raised in New York and lived there almost all of my life. However, about a year ago I bought a house in Oakland, NJ and officially became a “Jerseyite”. Most of my professional career was spent in various assignments with Exxon Corporation, both in NYC and Florham Park, NJ. Recently however I accepted a position as the Associate Budget Director at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ.

I have two terrific sons that I am very proud of; both graduated from Villanova University and are currently employed and doing well. My older son, Scott, rode with us on the shore ride last year. He is married and his wife is expecting a baby in July, which I guess will make me a grandfather…an exciting and scary thought! Those of you who attended the great 25th Anniversary Party in March met my younger son Chris, who served as the bartender. He’s single and lives in Hoboken.

I can remember growing up in the Bronx always enjoying biking, and have fond memories of my cousins and me riding to City Island to go fishing. I don’t recall ever catching many fish, but I do remember having good times riding our bikes.

Kathy Davenport, who I know from the Ramapo Mountain Ski Club, got me into riding again when she suggested being a Marshall for the Five Borough Bike Tour in NYC. I thought it would be fun and had my son’s 12 speed Huffy tuned up and off I went. Most didn’t think I‘d be able to do the ride on that bike, but I proved them wrong and had a wonderful time. However, it wasn’t until about a year later when my friend bought a new bike and gave me his vintage 70’s steel Raleigh that I became enthused about riding again and joined the club. I have been a member of BTCNJ for about 4 years.

It’s been great fun riding with BTCNJ on many day and weekend trips and this year I plan to go on the Canadian Rockies trip with the club in July. I have met and made many new friends in the club. Being a member of the club has enabled me to be an active bike rider again and get involved in another activity.

I have been the BTCNJ Treasurer for about eight months, accepting the position after the previous treasurer resigned. I come to this position with much experience from my professional as well as my private life, having previously been the Treasurer for New City Little League and Ramapo Mountain Ski Club. I enjoy the financial aspects of this position and it provides the opportunity to interact with the other members of the Executive Committee.

When I’m not biking, I enjoy spending time with family and friends; skiing at Mad River Glen; listening to country music and dancing primarily at the Colorado Café; spending time at the shore and taking pictures as time permits.

I look forward to doing a lot of riding this year and hopefully will see you on the road! I’ll be the one with the checkbook in hand!
